To enter the program, applicants typically need a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction or a related field or a strong GCE Advanced Level profile with relevant subjects, usually supported by GCSEs at grades A*-C (or 9-4), including Maths and English. Other related Level 3 qualifications are also accepted. Applicants with an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved institution or equivalent international qualifications at Level 3, along with English language proficiency (if applicable), may also apply.
Relevant work experience in construction or a related industry can be considered, particularly for mature students or those without formal qualifications.
The course focuses on employability skills such as problem-solving, leadership, teamwork and commercial awareness, while combining theoretical study with practical learning through real-world scenarios, case studies and vocationally driven assessments.
It prepares students for roles in the HVAC sector and facilitates progression to higher-level roles, further education and professional accreditation, such as membership with CIBSE. Graduates of Higher Nationals in Building Services Engineering (HVAC) are well-prepared for various roles in the construction and built environment sectors, such as designing and planning building systems, installing and servicing air quality and temperature systems, providing ongoing support & maintenance.
With experience, graduates can progress to roles like graduate engineer, senior engineer, project manager, senior manager, or building services director. Employment opportunities span across consultancies, construction companies, house-building firms, educational institutions, local authorities and healthcare sectors. The program also offers a pathway to further academic study, including BEng (Hons) or MSc degrees, where students can deepen their technical, design and management skills. To earn the full award, students must pass eight taught modules, with assessment typically based on assignments set after completing relevant lectures, seminars and tutorials. These assignments can include written work, reports, workshop tasks, case studies, individual presentations and a professional practice portfolio.
Students are awarded a pass, merit or distinction based on the points accumulated from completing individual units.
Core modules include the Construction Design Project (Pearson-set), The Construction Environment, Mathematics for Construction, Principles of Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, Scientific Principles for Building Service and Digital Applications for Building Information Modelling. Optional modules include Tender & Procurement and Science & Materials.
